Happy Thursday! Welcome to another edition of The Monitor, WIRED's pop culture roundup. What's happening this week that's not breathless anticipation for Game of Thrones? Well, Hellboy might have a tough time keeping up at the box office this weekend. Also, Hulu is getting in on the Theranos action, and Hawkeye is getting a Disney+ show, apparently. Let's dive in.
The latest iteration of Hellboy—this time starring Stranger Things' David Harbour as the titular character instead of Ron Perlman—is on track to bring in between $17 million and $21 million at the box office this weekend. If that seems low, it's because it is. Moreover, it could get beat by Shazam!, which is in its second weekend of release and looking to bring in $21 million after its $53.5 million domestic opening.
Can't get enough content about Elizabeth Holmes and Theranos? You're in luck! Hulu is, according to Deadline, close to a deal to acquire The Dropout, a limited series based on the ABC News/ABC Radio podcast about Holmes' rise and fall. The series comes from Fox Searchlight's new TV division and will star, and be produced by, Saturday Night Live star Kate McKinnon.
And now, something for the archery fans! Variety reports that Marvel is working on a show for Disney+ that focuses on Hawkeye. Not too many details are known, but apparently the series will involve Clint Barton giving the Hawkeye mantle to Kate Bishop, who took over for him in the comics. Jeremy Renner, who plays the hero in the Avengers movies, is reportedly attached to star.
So, this isn't the first trailer for Disney's new version of The Lion King, but man. It's still worth watching. We'll leave final judgement to you, but this movie looks so real, it's almost hard to believe these lions are largely CGI. (Yes, it's a "live-action" remake, but ... you know what we mean.) Way to avoid the Uncanny Valley, Jon Favreau.
