It's On: A Brawny New Lexus Aimed at BMW's Base

BMW may have a pair of pavement-shredding scalpels on its hands in the form of the M3/M4 twins, but Toyota's luxury arm just brought out a 450-horsepower machete to the party.

BMW may have a pair of pavement-shredding scalpels on its hands in the form of the M3/M4 twins, but Toyota's luxury arm just brought out a 450-horsepower machete to the party.

It's called the RC-F, and the "F" is the important part. That's the letter Lexus reserves for its most potent performance machines, just like BMW has M, Mercedes has AMG, and Audi has RS.

By adding an F to the boot, the brawny coupe gets a 5.0-liter V8 sending at least 450 hp to the rear wheels through an automatic gearbox -- likely packing eight speeds and several sports-oriented shift patterns -- while a quartet of exhaust pipes shuttle spent hydrocarbons out back. Just above that is an active rear wing that pops up when you hit 50 mph, and sucks back into the body when speeds dip below 25.

The 19-inch wheels play nicely with the bulging fenders and angular, organic creases in the sheet metal. And while we still think the front "spindle" grille looks like the Predator on a bad day, the RC-F is the best iteration of Lexus' corporate face we've seen to date. Expect more details, performance figures, and an on-sale date later this year.
