Cisco has released the 819 Integrated Services Router Machine-to-Machine (M2M) Gateway, a new router designed to connect appliances and other every-day closed computing environments to the internet.

The smallest member of Cisco’s ISR office routers, it will incorporate such off-internet devices as ATMs, vending machines, refrigerators and portable medical devices into standard computing networks. Once hooked up, network managers can manage them remotely rather than having to travel onsite and make fixes and alterations in person.

Because it will need to be outdoors, the 819 ISR functions in temperatures as low as negative 13 degrees Fahrenheit and as high as 140 degrees and will support firewalls, content filtering, intrusion detection, and encryption. It can be remotely managed through Cisco Prime.
