More new tech from Israel at 3GSM. This time it's mobile VOIP that works over 3G networks, GPRS and WiFi. You can call and IM free from Fring to Fring, but you can also use their client software to chat and call over Skype and Google Talk, including Skypeout. Fring automatically grabs the best network, although they say that if your calls are "mission critical" then you should probably just place a regular call. I tried it out here at the show. You get to use your own Skype username and the Fring software on your phone will pick up on status messages, so you know who is already on a call, who is away, and who is desperate to chat (Skype Me!)
I think that this kind of integration, and the live info on presence is what we will see built into all phones in the not too distant future. In the meantime, check this out. All regular services are free.
Available now for Windows Mobile 6, UIQ and of course Nokia S60.
Update: I have just got a message from the Fring guys, who say that the UIQ and Windows Mobile support is still in beta, but it'll be out very soon. So, Nokia only for now.
