There's a new sheriff online. Houston-based Even Balance (www.evenbalance.com) has developed PunkBuster software to block multiplayer cheats in real time. The app runs on game servers and scans hard drives; its main targets are bugs and outright hacks, found on IRC channels and FTP sites, that give you an unfair advantage by allowing you to walk through walls, shoot around corners, and disappear at will. Activision (Soldier of Fortune) and id Software (Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Quake III) have incorporated a beta version on some servers, and other companies are expected to follow. "Nobody wants to compete against cheaters," says Even Balance founder Tony Ray. But there's one glitch: Players don't have to agree to the software scan to play.
