The Status Quo argument is fallacious, yet it has been readily accepted by the members of Congress, the press, and the American people. A more sensible approach to formulating public policy would be to look at the institutional abuse of wiretaps and code-breaking technology in our checkered past, then build systems that are fundamentally secure.
That would be a status quo worth keeping.
